17th Avenue Re-Construction – 14th & 15th Ave One-Ways

You may be aware that The City is changing 14th and 15th Ave into one-ways for the duration of the 3 year  re-construction on 17th Avenue. The most recent update from The City regarding the 14th and 15th Ave One-Ways is as follows:

Visit us at McHugh House to learn more about 14 & 15 Avenues

Last week The City decided to postpone the implementation of one-way traffic on 14 and 15 Avenues to further review the detour design.

Come chat with members of the project team to learn more about how one-way traffic will be implemented and the different traffic calming measures we are exploring to ensure that no matter if you’re walking, cycling or driving 14 and 15 Avenue will still be accessible and safe.

Stop by McHugh House – 112 17th Ave SW any time between 12 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from May 25 to June 6.

For some background (for the 17th Avenue Reconstruction Website):

To help visitors and Beltline residents navigate around work zones we’re changing 14 and 15 Avenues into one way streets. This kind of change will take time to implement. City crews will begin switching signs on 14th and 15th Avenue SW during the week of June 5th.

This detour was designed with business owners and community members in mind. It’s important to keep bus routes like the #6 and #7 as close as possible to their original route, for Calgary Transit users.

Why it works:

  • Turning 14 and 15 Avenues into one-way streets with one lane of traffic in each direction allows for enough space to keep Calgary Transit bus route running on and close to 17 Avenue S.
  • Maintains an east-west connection around the construction zone, that’s close to 17 Avenue for people visiting the area.
  • Maintains on-street parking, although some parking will be temporarily removed to accommodate transit detours and bus stops.
  • Accommodates traffic and transit detours around the construction on 17 Avenue, without making 14 Avenue and 15 Avenues commuter thoroughfares.

How it will work:

People driving will only be detoured around the construction zone. Signs will be in place directing people off of 17 avenue S. at the construction zone and then back onto 17 Avenue S. after they’ve bypassed the construction zone.

As the construction moves west on 17 Avenue S., the detour signs will also move on 14-15 Avenue S. to reflect the construction area.

One-way traffic will be in place between Macleod Trail and 14 Street S.W. for the duration of the project (3-4 years):

  • All stop signs will remain along both corridors – only possibly changing should the detour impact a specific intersection.
  • 14 Avenue is one lane for westbound traffic with parking on the north and south side of the street.
  • 15 Avenue is one lane for eastbound traffic with parking on the north and south side of the street.
  • All walking connections in the Beltline community remain in place.
